a few quick updates. the image above is myself and William Roper from a concert on February 26th, 2011 with David Watson, performing one of David’s ‘ambulent’ pieces in the Beacon Arts Building here in Los Angeles. there were 8 of us total, and it was a large, spatial, guided improvisation piece in which we all had to walk across the large space (thus the bass drum) and yield to the commands of the leader of our group (there were 2 groups of four). in many ways, it was the most fun gig ive played.

also, have been playing some duets with bass player jeff schwartz that have been fun. will post some of the music here pretty soon i hope. there is some more interesting stuff happening in the near future – more on that as more info becomes available.

An Evening of Light, Space, and Sound
September 2, 2010, 8-9 PM, Free Admission
Culver Center of the Arts
3834 Main Street
Riverside, CA 92501

An Evening of Light, Space and Sound is a live sonic/visual performance that will transform the façade of the Culver Center of the Arts into a large abstract space of color, light, and form. Through video projections, abstract imagery, and live sound compositions, the artists will blur the distinction between public and private space while exploring new possibilities of live performance and art practice. In respect to Earth’s nearest celestial neighbor, the moon, the artists will summon its equinoctial presence through the projection of its abstracted form on a series of large weather balloons and again through musical improvisation. A sequence of three sound-art ensembles will perform music exploring the realms of space and the immaterial in human language through amplified spatial arrangements and sonic improvisations. Performing outdoors, color-field light projections will fall upon the musicians and illuminate their actions, activating the visual space of the acoustic. Each group will perform individually and together through improvised segues from one ensemble to the next, yielding a collaborative score. In this moment of dematerialization, the artists will transform the Culver Arts Center into a mediated space of ambient form.

Featuring video and film by Doug Henry, Joe Potts, and Gabie Strong, with music performances by: Jorge Martin (electronics and live processing) and Anna Homler (vocals and electronics) Greg Lenczycki (keyboards & electronics), Albert Ortega (resonant electronics), Ted Byrnes (drums and percussion), and Steuart Liebig (bass guitar) Lady Noise – Kelly Coats (flute and vocals), Kathleen Kim (Mandicaster and amplified violin), Gabie Strong (electric bass), and Sandy Yang (drums and guitar).

a bit about it:
Byrnes and DeSano’s 5×5 (in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the City of West Hollywood), consists of five ten-minute long sections, each prescribed with its own set of rules for quartet. Although guided by the score, it is through key areas of improvisation that the piece obtains its unique and ephemeral quality. Central to the improvisation is a recurring melodic theme written in celebration. Byrnes adds “texture and density, lightness and sparseness converge to give the music form through both the presence and the absence of timbre, rhythm, and pitch.” Steuart Liebig (electric bass/electronics), and Glenn Bach (electronics) will join Byrnes (percussion) and DeSano (accordian) in performing the composition which Byrnes describes as “moments of extreme serenity juxtaposed against abrasive movement, a synergistic process emerges that opens to question the simultaneity and coexistence of both minimalist and maximalist musical tendencies and their material origins in performance.”

sound. at the Kings Road Park Pavilion
A 3-month series of commissions celebrating West Hollywood’s 25th Anniversary

A series of commissions celebrating West Hollywood’s 25th Anniversary including work by Ted Byrnes and Ari Desano, Scott Benzel, and Wadada Leo Smith. Performances happen the last Saturday in June, July, and August.

5×5
Ted Byrnes: drumset/percussion
Ari DeSano: accordion
Steuart Liebig: electric bass / electronics
Glenn Bach: electronics

For this commission, Ted Byrnes and Ari DeSano will create a new work for a quartet whose focus on the intensity of sound, color, and texture serves as the essence of its music. Through the intersection of four distinct and varied musical approaches, this quartet will unite under the guidance of a structured graphic score, exploring both the unbridled improvisational connectivity and focused sonic interplay of their practice. Texture and density, lightness and sparseness converge to give the music form through both the presence and the absence of timbre, rhythm, and pitch.

The piece, titled 5×5 (in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the City of West Hollywood) consists of 5 ten minute long sections, each prescribed with its own set of rules for the trio to play within. Central to the improvisation is a recurring melodic theme written in celebration. As moments of extreme serenity are juxtaposed against abrasive movement, a synergistic process emerges that opens to question the simultaneity and coexistence of both minimalist and maximalist musical tendencies and their material origins in performance. Although guided by the score, it is through key areas of improvisation that the piece obtains its unique and ephemeral quality.

Performance begins at 5:00 p.m.

Location:
Kings Road Park Pavilion
1000 North Kings Road
West Hollywood, CA 90069
